It is a car chock full of innovations, the Citroen SM features rotating headlights, self leveling nitrogen suspension, hydro-pneumatic assisted steering, rain sensing wipers and inboard mounted disc brakes on all four corners. Keep in mind the car was launched in 1970.

An original one owner Citroen SM is !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for $24,500. The car was repainted once in the original metallic brown paint, has original paperwork, and is equipped with the desirable 3.0 liter V6 Maserati engine paired with a five speed manual transmission.

The SM's paint looks like it would benefit from a good buffing, and the leather on the front seat corners is worn, but on the whole the car appears for be in good driving condition.

Ah, I recall Adam Sandler driving a Bentley Conti GT in the remake. I much prefer the SM.

"Citroen SM features rotating headlights"

Not when equipped with this US front fascia. You'll need the original (European) headlights for this function.

Thanks for noticing that. I wonder if the front fascia change was done to meet US crash regulations or if it was because of something else.

There were no crash regs in 1970.

Glass-covered headlights were outlawed after 1968. It's why the XKE and 240Z never came with glass-covered headlights in America, while they did elsewhere.

It's why the Dodge Magnum XE (at 0:09-11) and St. Regis had their transparent headlight covers retract when the lights came on.

Only dual (from 1940) or quad (after 1958) circular sealed-beam headlights were allowed until rectangulars were allowed starting in 1974. Then the design regs were relaxed a lot after 1983.

Like autovox mentioned, it had to do with headlight standards. The US required sealed beam headlights until the mid 80s. The Europeans (and Japanese I'd guess) were a few decades ahead at the time.

Here's the late 60s Citroën DS, which had directional headlights as well btw, with the EU version on top and the US version below. Also notice the class casing being absent in the US version. This is true for the SM as well.

I wonder what the ban on glass covered headlights was supposed to achieve. Anyone know?

Oh my. Me gusta. A lot.

And it seems like half of the SMs are painted that metallic brown...that or white or gold. Other colors are pretty rare.
